The focus of Yaya African Art Gallery, London is to exhibit, represent and champion artists from all over the world, in particular artists from Sub-Saharan Africa and Cuba. The artists employ all mediums.

picassoMany contemporary African artists borrow heavily from traditional predecessors. Ironically, this emphasis on abstraction is seen by Westerners as an imitation of European and American cubist and totemic artists, such as
Pablo Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani and Henri Matisse, who, in actuality were heavily influenced by traditional African art. This became the first step of evolution in Western art where people started becoming more open-minded and came out of their shell to explore the different aspects of art.

A number of artists from various African countries and Cuba have seen the value of their works increase dramatically and with increased support for artists and their organizations.

Some very serious artists have emerged, producing works of brilliance and international contemporary importance. Yaya African Art Gallery, London has such artists.

The contemporary urban environment in Africa has nurtured ever increasing numbers of artists who are creating art that is directed at local or international markets rather than for use in ancient religious practices. These artists strive to create art forms that reflect their own cultural backgrounds but that express new ideas about the struggle to deal with a difficult and quickly changing African environment.

Each of the artists in this gallery seeks to create a style that is unique and that will provide him or her with an identity and a vehicle for expressing his own ideas. They would like to sell their work, but at the same time do not want to succumb to constant pressure from their audience to conform to stereotypes about what African art should look like.
